How does Acupuncture work?
There are over 360 known acupuncture points, each with specific functions and purposes that are chosen according to the individual patient and their needs. Most points are connected in an intricate form of channels known as meridians. Illness is often the result of a blockage in or between a meridian, which can then be resolved by needling various points.
Everybody is an individual, and two people with the same symptom are likely to receive different treatments, each one targetting the cause of the symptom. At the same time, the same two people are likely to take a different length of time to respond to acupuncture treatment.
Along with needling, other techniques can also be used. Moxibustion is the application of warmth to an area by burning a dried herb called moxa. Cupping involves applying small cup shaped glass bowls to specific areas and applying suction to stimulate the area. Gua Sha is a form of deep massage where blunt instruments are used over certain areas to help relax muscles and stimulate the area. As an alternative to needling, pressure can be applied using either fingers, magnets or a crystal to stimulate acupuncture points, known as acupressure. This particular technique is very effective for young children or those who are nervous of needles.
What Happens when I come for Treatment?
Initial Consultation.
Before your treatment can begin, it is vital that the acupuncturist knows as much about you as possible in order to plan the best treatment for you. The initial consultation will take around 11/2 hours and will include a detailed discussion about your complaint and medical history, along with details about your health and lifestyle. After this you will have your first treatment. It is better to take things easy after a treatment and avoid strenuous activities and drinking alcohol.
Please bring a list of your current medication and / or any supplements you are taking.
Following Treatments.
Each following treatment will usually take 45 minutes to 1 hour, and will include a discussion of your progress and experience of the previous treatment.
Everyone is unique, therefore your response to treatment will also be unique. Typically, people usually experience an overall improvement in their general health followed by an improvement in their main complaint. Some people respond quickly and will notice immediate benefits and others may take slightly longer to notice an improvement.
Frequency of Treatments.
The frequency of treatments will vary according to your individual needs. Usually, treatments are carried out on a weekly basis for 4 to 5 weeks, then once some improvement has been maintained then the frequency will be discussed and tailored to suit you.
